The first aspect of 6-OXO

non-hormonal testosterone metabolite 4-etioallocholen-3,6,17-trione, also known
as 6-OXO. Simply put, 6-OXO binds to the aromatase enzyme and deactivates it, so
that it is not available to do its job.
As a result, estrogen
production is reduced, and when estrogen is reduced the body responds by making
more testosterone, which is the raw material for estrogen synthesis.
Testosterone elevation from 6-OXO is sustained over 8 weeks, and then after the
discontinuation of 6-oxo testosterone levels simply return to normal.
Now you may be asking
yourself whether lowering estrogens is a bad thing for your health. The fact of
the matter is that when used at recommended dosages 6-OXO does not lower
estrogen levels. This is a consequence of what is known as the hormone escape
phenomenon. As I mentioned before, when estrogen production is reduced the
body compensates by producing more testosterone, which is the estrogen
precursor. Now with more estrogen precursor available estrogen levels will
return to normal. The end result is a new endocrinological set point – with
testosterone elevated and the testosterone/estrogen ratio readjusted to a higher
level.
Blocking estrogen production
via aromatase blockade is just the first part of the battle. With the addition
of an ingredient called resveratrol, we also are able to block the estrogen
receptor itself and keep it from binding to endogenous estrogens circulating
throughout the body.
Resveratrol is also known as
3,5,4`-trihydroxystilbene and it is in a class of compounds called the Stilbenes,
which also include the estrogen antagonists clomid and nolvadex. Resveratrol is
technically what is known as an estrogen receptor partial agonist, and that
means it can act as an estrogen in some tissues and as an anti-estrogen in
others. Luckily for us it apparently acts as an anti-estrogen at the
hypothalamus, since it is known to increase sperm count and testosterone levels
in males (as much as 166% in one study.)
Beyond Testosterone
The benefits of 6-OXO
Extreme and resveratrol go beyond simply elevating your natural levels of
testosterone. Resveratrol also has remarkable anti-aging effects and has been
shown to dramatically increase life span in a number of species.
You may have heard of people
drastically restricting their caloric intake in an effort to live a long time.
Caloric restriction has been shown in animals to have a very marked effect on
longevity and it is believed that a particular gene called SIRT 1 (or SIRT 2
depending on the species) is the key. Near starvation diets increase the
activation of the SIRT 1 gene but amazingly so does resveratrol. Scientists have
shown that increasing the expression of SIRT 1 through ingestion of resveratrol
mimics the effects of caloric restriction on protecting DNA from damage,
decreasing neurodegeneration, and greatly up-regulating the number and activity
of mitochondria.
This last effect is of
particular interest to athletes. Mitochondria are the energy powerhouse of cells
and the administration of resveratrol has been shown to markedly increase their
number in muscle cells. What this means is you will be much more efficient in
burning off calories, particularly fat calories. You can eat more and lose fat
due to increased basal metabolism. What it also means is that your muscular
endurance will vastly improve. In fact, resveratrol researcher Dr. Johan Auwerx
recently found that feeding mice resveratrol doubled the distance they
were able to run on a treadmill!!
